If you're having trouble with the shifter going into gears, make sure that nothing internally is wrong with the gearbox. That is unlikely the case unless the machine was neglected. 

It is very commonly known around the can am community that you must rock the machine back and forwards while lightly shifting the shifter. Better known as the "Can am rock"
